Principles of Scientific Administration

Principle of exception. “The exception principle is an information system that presents its data sun when the results, effectively verified in practice, are divergent or distance themselves from the expected results in a problem.”

Taylor adopted a fairly simple operational control system that was not based on average performance without verifying exceptions deviations from normal standards. What happens within normal standards should not worry too much the administrator’s attention; this should verify with priority the facts or occurrences that are outside the standards, the exceptions, to correct them properly and make the relevant decisions. The work can be done better and more economically by analyzing the work, this is the division and subdivision of all movements necessary for the execution of the various operations of a task.

The principle of exception is based on condensed and summarized reports that show only deviations, omit the normal facts and make them comparative and easy to use and visualize.

Principle of study of times and movements.

The study of times and movements was a basic instrument to rationalize the work of the workers.

By methodically and patiently observing the execution of each operation by the workers, Taylor saw the possibility of ordering simpler movements, eliminating useless movements, while the tools were simplified, fused with other movements so that the worker could save time and effort.

The study of times and movements was followed by the chronometer, the average time it took a common worker to execute a task. At this mean time other basic and dead times were added (wait, worker’s departures for personal needs), to obtain the standard time. This standardized the work method and the time allocated to its execution.

Principle of standards.

In this principle we no longer think about the study of times and movements or the fatigue of the worker but on the standardization of work methods and processes, of machines and equipment, tools and work tools, raw materials and components, in order to reduce the variability and diversity in the production process and therefore eliminate waste and increase efficiency. Standardization is the application of patterns in an organization or society to obtain uniformity and reduce costs. Standardization becomes a constant concern for obtaining efficiency. The principle of planning, seeks to replace in the work the individual criterion of the worker, improvisation and acting.

Standard. It is a unit of measurement adopted and commonly accepted as a benchmark for evaluation. Principle of planning and control. Visit BusinessStudyNotes to learn more about business principles.
